Caravaca Cross Pendant
This beautiful 14k gold pendant gets its name from a hillside town in Southeastern Spain called,
Caravaca. The Caravaca Cross is believed to have become popular in the 17thcentury to celebrate the end
of the black plague in Europe. The cross was considered to have mystical powers to protect the wearer
from predicaments such as rabies and lightning strikes. It was also used to promote fertility!
Our Caravaca Cross was discovered during an archaeological investigation at the Ximenez-Fatio site in St.
Augustine, Florida. The original is made of white bronze and was found broken in half but has since been
repaired. It is one of only two Caravaca Crosses to have been found in the United States at this time. It
can now be found on display inside the Fig Tree Gift Shop at the Ximenez-Fatio House Museum.
